Trevor Maveal is stepping up for Southwest Michigan

Born and raised in Michigan, Trevor Maveal is an experienced prosecutor and defense attorney ready to serve the people of Southwest Michigan as Berrien County Prosecutor. He’s prepared to use his experience and integrity to protect the citizens of Berrien County and the rule of law.

Trevor has spent most of his adult life in the legal profession. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of Detroit Mercy as a political science major and finishing law school at Wayne State University, his legal career began in 2013 as an assistant prosecutor in San Juan County, New Mexico. Over a five-year span, Trevor prosecuted over a thousand cases - from DUI to sexual assault and homicide- and worked with Federal agents to shut down methamphetamine manufacturing and trafficking. In addition, he taught search and seizure law at the local police academy and criminal law at the local college. In doing so, Trevor earned a reputation as a skilled trial lawyer who could be trusted to handle the most serious of cases, culminating in him being recognized with a statewide award for Outstanding Prosecutor of the Year in 2016.

After returning to Michigan in 2018, Trevor joined the Berrien County Prosecutor’s office, serving on the mental health and drug treatment court boards and handling several high-profile cases. In this role, he built a reputation as an honest prosecutor who prioritized violent or repeat offenders while retaining a sensible approach to handling cases involving young people and first-time offenders. However, all too often he witnessed overcharging and plea-bargaining practices that resulted in serious convictions and/or jail time for people who either needed help or deserved a break.  Equally concerning was seeing how the same plea-bargaining practice would routinely result in lighter sentences for career criminals who had been given enough chances.  In 2021, Trevor decided he could do more good by working with the people in the community who needed guidance through the legal system, and currently owns and operates his own law firm and serves as Treasurer for the Berrien County Bar Association.

Offering a potent combination of integrity and experience, Trevor’s top priority is building a prosecutor’s office that offers a better definition of justice for everyone. He is committed to treating anyone who encounters the justice system equally and fairly, and that consequences should be appropriate and measured on a case-by-case basis. Trevor knows that Berrien County’s residents deserve a prosecutor’s office that serves them, justice, and the rule of law in any way that it can, and is ready to deliver just that.
