Removing or vandalizing political signs is a crime

I'm a fairly new-to-SW Michigan resident, having settled in the Fair Plain area just 3 years ago.  From Day One my husband and I have felt the welcome from neighbors and strangers, including store clerks and restaurant staff.  The list of smiles and helpful suggestions has been seemingly endless. That's why I was stunned today to hear of behavior that goes against all we've experienced so far.

When looking for ways to connect even more locally, I was thrilled to find and volunteer with the terrific and hardworking people at The Berrien County Democratic Party.  While working as a volunteer, I have heard far too many stories from people who have gone to the time, trouble, and expense of purchasing and displaying signs for Dem candidates, including Harris-Walz, who have had their signs either stolen or vandalized.

Make no mistake, removing or vandalizing signs on someone else’s property is not a prank or “hijinks”. It is a crime.

We live in turbulent times. Political discourse has grown less civil, leading to this type of behavior, and worse. Nonetheless, I'm optimistic that we can do better.

So, today, I'm asking my fellow Dems and my neighbors who identify as Republicans to agree to turn down the rhetoric and to respect one another’s private property - including political signs of the current candidates- no matter your political leanings.

And, as a reminder, the Democratic party welcomes Independents, Republicans, and others who may be interested to learn more about our candidates and platforms as they make decisions on how they will vote in this critical election.  Please, stop by or give us a call at 269-588-3300.

And, let's all remember that SW Michigan is a wonderful place to live because of our neighbors and show each other courtesy and respect.

Vote!
